Located in the territory of Codrongianos, once the vibrant heart of the Giudicato di Torres and an essential stop on the medieval pilgrimage to Porto Torres, the Basilica of the Santissima Trinità di Saccargia is an architectural gem erected in 1112. This monumental building was commissioned by the judge of Torres, Costantino I de Lacon-Gunale, and his wife Marcusa, on the remnants of a pre-existing small church, and entrusted to the Camaldolese monks.
The basilica is a sublime example of Tuscan Romanesque style, constructed entirely with local black and white stones laid in an irregular fashion, creating a dynamic bicolor effect that captures the gaze. The facade, enriched with ceramic basins and inlaid geometric figures, is introduced by a portico adorned with sculpted capitals and decorated arches. The interior, with its cruciform layout and single nave, directs attention to the central apse, where you can admire twelfth-century frescoes of rare beauty, depicting Christ in Mandorla and scenes from the Passion.
There are many stories linked to this place and the symbols found within it—stories that oscillate between documented reality and legend, but that will surely captivate you and transport you into the ancient and controversial mysteries of the past.
With Cooperativa Aretè, every visit becomes a profound experience, a journey through time where every element, from the silence of the naves to the artworks, speaks directly to the soul. You will be guided on this path of discovery and wonder, to explore not just a place, but a living story that continues to unfold.
